Uttar Pradesh (UP) has emerged as a key player in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market, accounting for 19% of the total 2 million EV registrations in 2024, according to a report by Inc42. The state has made significant strides in EV adoption, reflecting a growing demand for sustainable transportation across India.

Maharashtra Dominates in Passenger EV Sales

While UP leads in overall EV adoption, Maharashtra takes the lead in passenger EV sales, with over 3,000 charging stations, the highest in India. The state’s commitment to infrastructure development and the growing interest in EVs is driving its dominance in the passenger segment, setting a high benchmark for other regions.

India’s EV Market Set to Soar by 2030

India’s EV market is on a rapid growth trajectory, expected to reach $132 billion by 2030. Factors such as rising fuel prices, government incentives, and increasing environmental awareness are propelling this growth, with commercial fleets and two- and three-wheelers leading the charge.

EV Infrastructure Needs Urgent Attention

As of December 2024, India had 25,202 public EV charging stations, which translates to one charging station for every 80 new EVs. However, with more than 5.8 million EVs currently on the road, the disparity grows to one station per 230 vehicles, underscoring the need for better charging infrastructure to support widespread EV adoption.

Government Support Key to Sustained EV Growth

The Indian government’s continuous efforts to incentivize EV adoption and reduce reliance on fossil fuels are pivotal to the sector’s growth. With expected sales of 17 million EVs annually by 2030, India is well on track to becoming a global leader in the electric mobility revolution.
