In a major push to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, the Indian government is preparing to roll out 360 kW ultra-fast EV chargers across the country. The initiative is aimed at strengthening charging infrastructure and reducing range anxiety for EV users, especially on highways and high-traffic corridors.

The 360 kW chargers, significantly more powerful than the currently common 50–120 kW chargers, will drastically reduce charging time for electric vehicles, particularly electric buses and commercial vehicles. Officials say these high-capacity chargers will enable long-distance EV travel with minimal downtime.

According to government sources, the deployment will be carried out in phases, beginning with key metropolitan regions and national highways. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is overseeing the initiative in coordination with key public sector undertakings (PSUs) and private charging infrastructure providers.

The ultra-fast chargers will support both CCS and other universal charging standards to ensure compatibility with a wide range of electric vehicles. Officials note that this upgrade aligns with India’s broader goals of creating a robust EV ecosystem and promoting sustainable mobility solutions.

The move comes at a time when electric vehicle adoption in India is gaining momentum, driven by policy incentives, state-level subsidies, and growing consumer interest. Enhanced infrastructure is considered critical to achieving the government’s EV penetration targets by the end of the decade.

Industry experts have welcomed the plan, noting that faster charging speeds will play a vital role in mainstreaming EVs across segments, including passenger cars, heavy-duty trucks, and intercity buses. The upcoming 360 kW chargers mark a significant milestone in India’s transition toward cleaner transportation.
