Hitachi Construction Machinery and ABB have jointly developed a 240-ton fully electric dump truck. This innovative vehicle, designed to replace traditional diesel-powered models, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance operational efficiency in mining operations. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to advancing eco-friendly technologies in the heavy machinery sector.

The electric dump truck utilizes ABB’s cutting-edge battery technology, enabling it to draw power from an overhead trolley system while simultaneously charging its onboard energy storage. This dynamic charging approach allows for continuous operation without the need for extended charging breaks, thereby maintaining high productivity levels. Additionally, the truck features regenerative braking, which recovers energy during downhill travel to recharge the battery, further optimizing energy use.

A prototype of the electric dump truck was shipped in January 2024 to the Kansanshi copper-gold mine in Zambia for real-world testing. The mine’s existing trolley infrastructure makes it an ideal location for evaluating the truck’s performance under actual mining conditions. The testing phase aims to assess the vehicle’s operational capabilities, including its ability to handle heavy loads and navigate challenging terrains.

The development of this electric dump truck is part of a broader initiative by Hitachi and ABB to promote electrification in mining. By replacing diesel engines with electric systems, the companies aim to reduce the carbon footprint of mining activities and contribute to global sustainability goals. The project also highlights the potential for retrofitting existing diesel fleets with electric technology, offering a scalable solution for the industry.

Industry experts have lauded the innovation, noting its potential to transform mining operations. The integration of dynamic charging and regenerative braking not only enhances energy efficiency but also reduces maintenance costs associated with traditional braking systems. Moreover, the elimination of diesel engines minimizes environmental pollution and aligns with the increasing regulatory focus on sustainable practices.

As the mining industry continues to seek ways to reduce its environmental impact, the introduction of fully electric heavy-duty vehicles represents a significant advancement. Hitachi and ABB’s collaboration serves as a model for how technological innovation can drive progress toward more sustainable industrial operations. The successful deployment of the electric dump truck at the Kansanshi mine could pave the way for broader adoption of similar technologies across the sector.
