No ban on sale of non-electric vehicles in Chandigarh

The petitioners argued that even though they wanted to purchase a two-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine, Chandigarh's new policy forbade the registration of non-electric two-wheelers. They asked the High Court to overturn the EV policy.

The Chandigarh Union Territory administration told Punjab and Haryana High Court that there is “no ban on sale” of two-wheelers run on internal combustion engines after a plea by 10 residents challenged the electric vehicle (EV) policy of the administration.

The petitioners, Pradeep Sisodia, and others asked the High Court to overturn the EV policy and claimed that even though they wanted to purchase a two-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine, the new policy forbade Chandigarh residents from registering non-electric two-wheelers. The petitioners’ attorney continued by saying that this infringes on their right to own and operate such vehicles.

The High Court was informed by the UT administration’s attorney that Chandigarh is not prohibited from selling such vehicles. The attorney continued by saying that the petitioner could purchase the vehicles as early as March and that Chandigarh’s Registering Authority could also provide temporary registration.

The council also said that within the prescribed period from the date of purchase, permanent registration can also be obtained from the concerned Registering Authority in Chandigarh.
