AutoEVTimes: How is the Smart Cities India expo furthering the cause of the Smart Cities Mission in India?
Ms. Chandrika: The concept of a Smart city has evolved from merely incorporating technology to becoming futuristic demonstrations of cutting-edge technology. To ease the lives of the citizens, Smart Cities in India have been evolving into large-scale urban expansion projects with technology as an integral part of the ecosystem. This includes providing sustainable housing to the poor, building state-of-the-art smart infrastructure, upgrading essential utilities, pushing for greater green cover, encouraging clean energy and transport, and so much more!
The Smart Cities India expo was the first of its kind when it was launched alongside the Smart Cities India Mission with a focus on fulfilling its vision and other associated initiatives. Over the years, the expo has evolved to encompass all aspects of urban development and mobility to create a smart and sustainable ecosystem in our cities. Therefore, the story of the Mission and the expo are intertwined. The expo continues to be the game-changer and the leading platform for the technologies and solutions revolutionising India’s urban landscape. It facilitates coordination between governments and technology providers to pool the expertise needed to implement and integrate the latest and innovative technologies for the public good. The expo also provides opportunities for collaboration and partnerships among the private players, including overseas participants, which is perhaps the best way of marking growth.
Smart Cities India is an opportunity for players across all segments of urban development, mobility, smart cities and tech applications to interact with each other, expand business opportunities and make new alliances.
AutoEVTimes: Technology uptake and digital integration in urban planning are crucial to developing modern cities. How will this change the landscape of our cities?
Ms. Chandrika: Today, ICT-enabled management information systems (MIS) have penetrated every aspect of our lives. People have access to many services through apps, the availability of telecommunications infrastructure, and Internet access. Meanwhile, the Smart Cities Mission has emerged as critical to transforming around 100 cities in the country boasting a million-plus population and needing a structured approach to urbanisation. Under the guided approach of the mission, functions integral to the working of a city are now being performed through partnerships and collaborations by various government departments, the private sector, community organisations, and academic institutions. This includes services, research, co-creation and valuable feedback. Data available with these entities is further analysed using ICT to plan the next steps in urban planning.
The mission’s success holds great promise for the future of other cities across India. Increased technology integration across the chain of administration and implementation has also created an integrated interface between the Centre, State and urban local bodies for activities like planning, monitoring, evaluation and MIS. A seamless flow of data clarifies the performance of various schemes and initiatives, encouraging others to participate in this digital revolution. It will not be surprising that India’s urban landscape will be the standard for other nations to follow.
