Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has announced plans to install 14 new electric vehicle charging stations across Berhampur often referred to as “Silk City.”

According to BeMC, the charging hubs will be spread across high-traffic zones, public places and major commuting routes so that they are easily accessible to everyday commuters. This is aimed at making EV charging more convenient for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

The move is part of BeMC’s broader push to boost green mobility and support the city’s transition to cleaner transportation. The plan reflects a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and aligning with national-level efforts to increase electric mobility across India.

Officials have clarified that the new chargers will be compatible with a variety of electric vehicles — including scooters, bikes, auto-rickshaws and cars — to cater to the growing demand for EV infrastructure.

With these 14 new stations, Berhampur’s EV infrastructure density is expected to improve significantly. This could make the city one of the better-equipped tier-2 cities in eastern India when it comes to public EV charging facilities.

By enhancing charging access and reducing “range anxiety”, BeMC hopes to encourage more residents to adopt EVs — paving the way for cleaner, sustainable urban transportation in Berhampur.
