Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has officially started replacing its conventional diesel- and petrol-powered vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) across the sacred hill shrine of Tirumala marking a big shift aimed at boosting sustainability and cutting pollution in the temple town.

Under the new initiative, TTD’s fleet which includes cars, buses, and utility vehicles used for temple operations, staff transport, and services around Tirumala will gradually turn electric. This phase-wise approach is meant to ensure that the pilgrim experience remains smooth while the transition takes place.

To support this fleet transition, TTD has started setting up dedicated EV-charging infrastructure at various points. The charging stations will serve not only TTD’s vehicles but are also expected to eventually aid pilgrims and visiting electric vehicles a significant boost for green mobility in the hills.

A key motivation for this push is the fragile ecology of Tirumala: located within an environmentally sensitive region, the hills and surrounding forest zones need protection from air and noise pollution. By switching to EVs, TTD hopes to safeguard the environment and improve air quality for both devotees and nature.

This effort forms part of a broader environmental strategy by TTD beyond just transportation. Alongside EV adoption, the trust is looking at renewable energy, improved waste management, and other sustainable practices to make Tirumala a model for green pilgrimage centres in India.

If the plan goes as intended, Tirumala could gradually become virtually free of fossil-fuel based transport offering devotees a cleaner, quieter, and more eco-friendly spiritual experience, while setting a precedent for temple towns and pilgrim destinations across the country.
