Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has officially opened its new manufacturing facility in Subang, West Java, Indonesia, marking a major milestone in its Southeast Asian production strategy. The inauguration took place on December 15 as part of the company’s effort to deepen its presence in one of the region’s largest automotive markets.
The Subang plant, developed on a 171-hectare site, represents a total investment of more than USD 1 billion, a figure that includes ongoing expansion plans aimed at scaling capacity significantly beyond initial levels. The facility is VinFast’s fourth operational factory worldwide, and its first manufacturing base in Southeast Asia outside Vietnam.
Phase 1 of the project, backed by an investment of over USD 300 million, has equipped the plant with a fully integrated production line featuring welding, painting, assembly, quality inspection and logistics operations. This initial setup enables the factory to build 50,000 vehicles annually, with scope to grow as the company scales up its operations.
VinFast plans to raise production capacity to 350,000 units per year as part of the broader expansion roadmap, reflecting confidence in rising EV demand within Indonesia and across Southeast Asia. Company executives have said the increased investment aligns with long-term regional market growth and export potential.
Industry analysts note the plant’s launch comes amid rising competition in the Indonesian EV sector, where global and regional manufacturers are investing heavily to capture market share. VinFast’s strategy also includes supporting localisation efforts that aim to boost local content in vehicles and create a broader EV ecosystem.
The new facility is expected to generate thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, contributing to local economic development in West Java. In addition to producing key EV models tailored for regional consumers, VinFast has signalled that the plant will support future exports to neighboring Southeast Asian markets as part of its long-term growth blueprint.
