Volkswagen has begun production of the ID. UNYX 08 electric SUV in partnership with Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng, marking the first jointly developed model under their strategic collaboration. The vehicle is part of Volkswagen Group’s broader push to strengthen its presence in China’s fast-growing EV market.

The ID. UNYX 08 is a fully electric full-size SUV developed specifically for the Chinese market under Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy. The model reflects the company’s focus on faster product development and stronger localisation to compete with domestic EV manufacturers.

Production of the electric SUV has started at Volkswagen’s Hefei manufacturing facility in Anhui province. The plant plays an important role in the company’s electrification roadmap and is expected to support future EV production as well.

The vehicle incorporates technologies developed with XPeng, including advanced electronic architecture and intelligent driving capabilities aimed at improving software integration and vehicle performance. The partnership allows Volkswagen to benefit from local technological expertise in China’s competitive EV ecosystem.

Volkswagen plans an aggressive expansion of its new-energy vehicle portfolio in China, with more than 20 new electric and plug-in hybrid models planned as part of a larger goal to introduce around 50 new energy vehicles in the country by 2030.

The start of ID. UNYX 08 production also underlines Volkswagen’s strategy of forming technology partnerships and accelerating local development. Another jointly developed EV model with XPeng is also expected in the future as part of this long-term cooperation.
