Samsung SDI has acquired General Motors’ 49.99% stake in the SynergyCells joint venture, taking full ownership of the battery cell manufacturing plant under construction in New Carlisle, Indiana, US. The move ends the companies’ joint-venture structure for the facility and gives Samsung SDI complete ownership of the project.
The ownership change comes as the US electric vehicle market faces weaker-than-expected demand. With full ownership of the Indiana facility, Samsung SDI will have greater control over production plans, capacity decisions and the future direction of the plant. The company can also evaluate opportunities across different battery applications as market conditions change.
The Indiana plant was originally planned as a battery cell manufacturing facility serving the electric vehicle market. Samsung SDI’s complete ownership provides the company with additional flexibility to determine how the facility is developed and how its production capabilities are aligned with future market requirements.
The facility could also support opportunities in the energy storage system (ESS) market as battery demand expands beyond electric vehicles. The shift reflects a broader change in the battery industry, where manufacturers are assessing both EV and energy storage applications amid changing market conditions. Samsung SDI’s ownership of the Indiana plant gives it greater flexibility to respond to these demand trends.
Despite ending the joint venture, Samsung SDI and GM will continue to work together on battery technology. The companies have entered into a joint development agreement covering next-generation prismatic battery cells for potential future electric vehicle applications. This keeps their technology collaboration active while Samsung SDI takes full control of the Indiana manufacturing facility.
Samsung SDI’s acquisition of GM’s stake marks a change in the ownership structure of the Indiana battery project while maintaining cooperation between the two companies on future battery technology. The development also highlights how battery manufacturers are adapting production strategies to changing EV demand and exploring opportunities in the growing energy storage market.
