For the first time in its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG is producing an SUV entirely in-house. unique to AMG.The innovative off-road vehicle “Born in Affalterbach” is built on an EA electric high-performance platform. This winter, prototype test drives will begin.
High-performance SUVs have been a major part of AMG’s inventory since the launch of the ground-breaking ML 55 AMG over 25 years ago. This innovative model spawned the industry for high-performance SUVs, which has grown steadily since. Mercedes-AMG now has six SUV model lines: the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV. Additionally offered is the well-known Mercedes-AMG G 63, a representation of off-road cars with a focus on performance.
This new SUV project is a major milestone because it is the first time that AMG is developing the full vehicle architecture internally. The full-size SUV will be the second car built on the all-electric AMG.EA platform, following the first model, which is now being tested. It will join AMG’s esteemed lineup of in-house cars, which currently includes the GT, SL, SLS, and earlier GT models, further solidifying Affalterbach’s legacy of high-performance engineering.

We are responding to this trend by offering our customers the “Born in Affalterbach” SUV, a very intriguing high-performance off-road vehicle constructed on the AMG.EA platform. “AMG First, EV Second” is the tenet that guides our new high-performance architecture. “This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance,” said Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-Benz G-Class divisions.
