Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland has started construction of a new electric vehicle (EV) battery pack manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. The project involves an investment of around ₹400–500 crore and marks another important step in the company’s electric mobility expansion strategy.

The new greenfield plant is being set up at Pillaipakkam near Chennai and will focus on producing battery packs for electric commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks. The facility is expected to strengthen domestic EV component manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.

The project is part of the investment commitments made by the Hinduja Group after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in September 2025. The initiative also aligns with the state’s EV policy and India’s broader clean mobility goals.

The foundation stone for the facility was unveiled in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin along with senior government officials and company leadership. The event highlighted the state’s focus on becoming a major EV manufacturing hub.

According to company executives, the new plant will help develop advanced battery pack solutions with better safety, efficiency, and reliability. It is also expected to create employment opportunities and support skill development in advanced manufacturing technologies.

With this project, Ashok Leyland aims to further strengthen its presence in the electric commercial vehicle segment and contribute to building a strong EV ecosystem in India while supporting the transition toward sustainable transportation.
