BMW Group and energy giant E.ON have launched the country’s first commercially available vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging package aimed at private electric vehicle (EV) customers, marking a significant step in integrating EVs into the broader energy system. The offering pairs bidirectional charging hardware with a dedicated electricity tariff that allows EV batteries to send power back into the grid.

Under the program, BMW’s new iX3 — part of the automakers Neue Klasse lineup — can not only draw power from the home charging station but also supply stored energy back to the grid, helping support grid stability and renewable energy integration. The complete package includes the BMW Wallbox Professional, an E.ON V2G electricity contract, and a smart metering system where needed.

Drivers who opt in can earn financial bonuses tied to how long their EV remains connected and available for bidirectional charging. The annual bonus can reach up to €720, which BMW and E.ON say can effectively offset charging costs for up to about 14,000 kilometres of driving — depending on usage patterns and tariff conditions.

To encourage early adoption, the first 100 customers who sign up for the E.ON V2G tariff will receive a €700 discount on the BMW Wallbox Professional, one of the first bidirectional wallboxes commercially offered in the market. Users can monitor charging status and bonus earnings via the My BMW app.

BMW and E.ON also introduced a cost-optimized smart charging feature for all fully and partially electric BMW and MINI models in Germany. This system automatically manages charging times to take advantage of lower electricity prices, with eligible customers able to save up to €240 annually through the special E.ON tariff.

Company leaders described the V2G launch as a milestone for both electromobility and the energy transition. By turning EVs into flexible power storage assets, the partners aim to help balance electricity supply and demand, especially as renewable generation grows. The initiative builds on the long-standing strategic partnership between BMW and E.ON first announced at IAA Mobility in 2025.
