BW ESS has expanded its presence in Spain’s energy storage market with the acquisition of two utility-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from Spanish renewable energy and storage developer Navacant. Located in the Valencia region, the projects have a combined power capacity of 126 MW and up to 675 MWh of energy storage capacity. The acquisition strengthens BW ESS’s growing Spanish energy storage platform.

The two BESS projects have individual capacities of 99 MW and 27 MW, respectively. Both projects have been under development for around 18 months and are expected to reach Ready-to-Build status in 2027. Commercial operations are currently targeted for 2028, subject to the projects progressing through their remaining development stages.

The acquisition comes as energy storage becomes increasingly important for Spain’s electricity system. Battery storage can respond quickly to changes in electricity supply and demand, while helping integrate variable renewable generation. The newly acquired projects are therefore positioned to support greater flexibility and operational resilience as Spain continues to develop its renewable energy infrastructure.

BW ESS said the projects’ scale and grid-connection capacity align with its strategy for expanding its Spanish storage platform. The company plans to combine greenfield development with acquisitions of advanced-stage projects as it builds a diversified energy storage portfolio in the country. BW ESS has been active in the Spanish energy storage market since 2025.

Under the partnership structure, CST Energy, one of Navacant’s partners, will continue leading the projects through the remaining development phase until they reach Ready-to-Build status. BW ESS will then take responsibility for delivering the projects through construction and into their operational phase. The company intends to own and operate the assets over the long term.

The acquisition adds to BW ESS’s wider Spanish development portfolio, where the company is progressing an initial 2.2 GW pipeline across eight projects. With the latest Valencia projects, BW ESS is further expanding its position in Spain’s growing battery energy storage sector and strengthening its focus on long-term ownership and operation of large-scale BESS assets.
