Coal India Invites EPC Bids for Telangana Battery Storage Project

Coal India Limited (CIL) has invited Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) bids for the development of a 187.50 MW/750 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the 400/220 kV Choutuppal Substation in Telangana. The project is part of the company’s expanding clean energy portfolio and is designed to strengthen energy storage infrastructure while supporting reliable power supply.

The selected EPC contractor will undertake the complete scope of the project, including design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the battery energy storage system. The contract also includes civil works, associated electrical infrastructure, system integration, statutory approvals and all activities required for successful project execution.

In addition to constructing the BESS facility, the successful bidder will be responsible for developing the associated evacuation infrastructure, including the required 220 kV switchyard bay and grid connectivity. The project also carries a comprehensive operation and maintenance responsibility for a period of 15 years after commissioning to ensure long-term system performance and reliability.

Coal India has prescribed detailed technical and financial qualification requirements for participating bidders. Eligible companies must demonstrate relevant experience in executing similar infrastructure or energy projects and satisfy the financial eligibility criteria specified in the tender documents. Interested bidders are required to submit all supporting documents along with their proposals.

As per the tender schedule, bidders must furnish an earnest money deposit (EMD) of ₹50 lakh. The last date for bid submission is August 19, 2026, while the techno-commercial bids are scheduled to be opened on August 20, 2026. Coal India will evaluate submissions based on the eligibility conditions and technical requirements outlined in the bidding documents.

The tender marks another significant step in Coal India’s diversification beyond conventional coal mining into renewable energy and energy storage. With utility-scale battery storage becoming increasingly important for balancing electricity demand and supporting renewable energy integration, the Telangana BESS project is expected to contribute to the development of a more flexible and resilient power network.
