Cummins Inc. has been selected to supply battery energy storage systems for a large data center project in the United States. The company’s Power Generation business will provide the BESS solution to support utility-defined requirements related to AI-driven fluctuations in electricity demand, load oscillations and ride-through performance. The project marks a significant step for Cummins in the rapidly expanding data center energy infrastructure market.

The deployment is expected to be Cummins’ largest battery energy storage project to date. The company said the system will help address the fast-changing power requirements associated with advanced computing and AI workloads, which can create significant variations in electricity demand.

The battery energy storage system will be designed to respond quickly by charging and discharging as required. This capability can help manage demand spikes, reduce load fluctuations, improve power quality and support a more stable connection between the data center and the utility network.

Cummins introduced its BESS solutions in May 2025 as part of its broader power technology portfolio. The systems are designed for applications including bridge-to-grid operations, peak demand management, backup power integration and microgrid configurations, providing data center operators with greater flexibility in managing their power infrastructure.

The company’s BESS platform for hyperscale and AI data center applications uses a flexible architecture that can be integrated with different power conversion and energy management systems. Cummins’ solution features lithium iron phosphate battery technology, liquid cooling and a nominal energy capacity of 5 MWh.

With AI and hyperscale data centers placing increasing pressure on power infrastructure, energy storage is becoming an important tool for improving flexibility and resilience. Cummins said its BESS technology can help operators manage changing power requirements, optimise infrastructure and support the deployment of large-scale data center projects facing grid and interconnection challenges.
