In a significant stride toward sustainable urban mobility, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena today inaugurated a fleet of 24 electric school buses at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Lodhi Estate. The eco-friendly initiative aims to transform student transportation in the Capital.
Highlighting the swift environmental action taken by the government, LG Saxena remarked, “CM Gupta has Delhi in good hands. Within six months, she has initiated remarkable changes. The city will witness visible improvements over the next two to three years.”
Officials estimate that the new buses will serve around 1,200 students daily, replacing approximately 400–500 private vehicles on Delhi’s roads—thereby reducing vehicular emissions and easing traffic congestion.
CM Gupta described the launch as a “decisive step towards environmental conservation,” emphasising that it ensures safe and sustainable transport for schoolchildren—a move that safeguards not just their physical, but also mental well-being. “Living in balance with nature is the path to true progress,” she added.
She reiterated that pollution control remains a top priority, underlining complementary efforts including landfill cleanup, dust pollution reduction, expansion of green spaces, and rejuvenation of the Yamuna riverfront. “The logical next step in our clean transport roadmap is to make school buses electric,” she asserted.
Praising Sardar Patel Vidyalaya for converting its entire fleet to electric buses with government support, CM Gupta urged other schools to adopt similar green practices. She also announced plans for inter-school competitions focused on sustainable development and environmental conservation, urging students to embrace eco-friendly values. “Today, being patriotic means actively contributing to keeping our nation and city clean and pollution-free,” she said.
