The inauguration of the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway has catalysed significant demand for organised electric bus services along the corridor, industry leaders say. The new six-lane expressway, which trims journey times between the Indian capital and Dehradun dramatically, is reshaping intercity travel patterns and boosting interest in sustainable transit options.

According to Rohan Dewan, Founder of EV operator LeafyBus, improved connectivity and reduced travel times have accelerated uptake of electric intercity bus services. The expressway, spanning approximately 210 kilometres, has brought down traditional road travel to nearly 2.5–3 hours compared to 5–6 hours previously, making electric bus travel more viable for everyday passengers.

Dewan noted that the shift in commuter behaviour is reflected in LeafyBus’s own operations, where occupancy rates have risen along the Delhi–Dehradun route. Enhanced infrastructure, including fast charging facilities and better roadway conditions, has enabled EV buses to maintain punctual schedules with fewer delays—strengthening confidence among passengers choosing cleaner mobility alternatives.

Industry observers say the expressway’s development is timely for India’s growing electric mobility segment. With public and private investments flowing into EV charging infrastructure and fleet expansion, operators like LeafyBus are capitalising on the rising market. LeafyBus itself has pioneered the use of high-capacity fast chargers and expanded service frequency to meet rising demand.

The expressway’s impact extends beyond passenger convenience. It is also encouraging new business models in intercity travel, where traditional diesel coach services once dominated. Analysts point out that structured EV bus networks could eventually set a standard for sustainable long-distance transport across the region.

Looking forward, LeafyBus and other EV operators are exploring further expansion along the northern corridor and beyond, leveraging policy support and infrastructure upgrades. With demand for clean and efficient travel rising, the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway is emerging as a key catalyst in India’s transition to organised electric intercity transportation.
