The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has approved Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited’s (GUVNL) plan to develop a 335 MW/670 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Gujarat. The approval is expected to strengthen the state’s renewable energy infrastructure and improve overall grid stability.
The battery storage project aims to support the increasing integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power into Gujarat’s electricity network. The storage systems will help store excess renewable energy during low-demand periods and supply power during peak consumption hours.
The project will be developed under a tariff-based competitive bidding process with support from the Government of India’s Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme. The financial assistance is intended to accelerate the deployment of large-scale battery energy storage systems across the country.
According to the approved proposal, the BESS facilities will be connected to substations operated by Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO). The systems are designed to perform multiple charging and discharging cycles daily, helping improve power reliability and efficient energy management.
Companies including Advait Energy Transitions, Equentia Natural Resources DMCC, and Sun Drops Energia have secured capacities under GUVNL’s battery storage tender. The selected developers will provide energy storage services under long-term agreements signed with GUVNL.
With the approval of the 670 MWh battery storage initiative, Gujarat continues to strengthen its position as a leading renewable energy state in India. The project is expected to support clean energy growth, enhance energy security, and contribute to India’s long-term decarbonization and sustainability goals.
