Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been officially designated as the nodal agency for implementing the Prime Minister’s Electric Vehicle (PM-EV) scheme, a strategic move aimed at fast-tracking EV ecosystem development in India.
The appointment, announced by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), empowers BHEL to coordinate the deployment of EV infrastructure, including charging stations and manufacturing support. The company will oversee planning, execution, and progress monitoring across the initiative.
As part of its responsibilities, BHEL will facilitate partnerships between public and private sector entities, ensuring alignment with the national goal of increasing EV penetration. The PM-EV scheme is a cornerstone policy designed to promote clean mobility and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
The nodal agency status strengthens BHEL’s position as a key player in India’s EV transition. The state-run enterprise already has a presence in electric mobility solutions and will now scale efforts to meet nationwide targets under the PM-EV framework.
Officials noted that BHEL’s technical expertise and extensive infrastructure make it well-suited for driving large-scale EV adoption. Its role will also include recommending policy interventions, identifying key locations, and supporting indigenization of critical components.
With this appointment, India reinforces its commitment to becoming a global EV hub, and BHEL’s leadership is expected to bring greater efficiency, structure, and momentum to the mission.
