Greaves Cotton Limited, a 165-year-old engineering company, has announced a strategic partnership with Bengaluru-based startup Chara Technologies to manufacture synchronous reluctance motors and controllers that do not rely on rare-earth magnets. These components will be produced at Greaves’ Shendra facility in Aurangabad and are intended for both automotive and non-automotive applications, including L5 three-wheelers, golf carts, and four-wheelers.
Chara’s innovative motor technology eliminates the need for rare-earth magnets, which are often difficult to source and pose environmental concerns. By removing these magnets, the motors are designed to maximize energy efficiency and reduce electromagnetic losses. According to the companies, this approach could lead to energy savings of up to 50% and a reduction in CO₂ emissions by approximately 30%, thanks to the use of more sustainable raw materials.
Dr. Arup Basu, Managing Director of Greaves Cotton Ltd., emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility through innovation and collaboration. He stated that the partnership with Chara Technologies aligns with Greaves’ vision and long-term strategy to leverage emerging technologies, build supply chain resilience, and enhance manufacturing excellence in the electric mobility ecosystem.
Echoing this sentiment, Bhaktha Keshavachar, Founder and CEO of Chara Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Greaves Cotton. He highlighted the opportunity to combine Greaves’ extensive industry expertise and reach with Chara’s advanced technological capabilities to accelerate the transition to clean mobility and contribute to India’s journey toward technological and energy independence.
This collaboration comes at a time when the global automotive industry faces significant supply chain challenges, including disruptions, labor shortages, and regulatory compliance issues. By developing rare-earth-free motor systems, Greaves Cotton and Chara Technologies aim to create more adaptable and resilient supply chains, positioning India as a key player in the global clean mobility transformation.
