The government is dedicated to creating an inclusive EV strategy that aligns with Viksit Bharat, India’s national goal. In order to promote this, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has taken the lead on issues pertaining to electric trucks and related infrastructure in India, as part of an EV taskforce that was recently established by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI).
This task force was established by the MHI in cooperation with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and other organizations.
Through workshops and stakeholder meetings, the ICCT and the MHI will interact with stakeholders to get their opinions and suggestions on a range of topics connected to the adoption of e-trucks and the development of associated infrastructure.
The industry contributing to climate change that is expanding the fastest is transportation. Even though they only account for 2% of all vehicles in India, medium- and heavy-duty trucks produce 45% of all emissions from vehicular road transportation. India will be able to fulfill its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Paris Agreement goals with more adoption of electric vehicles. For this reason, it is important that the process of electrifying trucks start right away.
“We are thrilled to be a member of this MHI task team. The e-truck and electric vehicle (EV) research experience of ICCT will be very beneficial in this regard. Our goal in conducting these stakeholder engagements is to generate a thorough mapping and analysis of the industry. Truck electrification in India would boost both commerce and environmentally friendly transportation, according to a remark from Amit Bhatt, Managing Director of ICCT in India.
