In an attempt to capture market share in Bangladesh for electric vehicles (EVs), Rancon Motors, the only distributor of Mercedes Benz cars there, introduced six new EV models yesterday.

At the International Convention City Bashundhara in Purbachal, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4matic SUV, EQS 450+ Sedan, EQE 350+ SUV, EQE 53 AMG SUV, EQE Sedan 350+, and EQB were unveiled.

An article stated that CEO Redwanul Zia, Divisional Director Imran Zaman Khan, and Chairman of the Rancon Group Romo Rouf Chowdhury were introduced during the occasion.

“Even though Bangladesh’s market for electric cars is small, this industry will grow in the future. As a result, we have introduced six new electric vehicles, Chowdhury Mohammad Nabil Hasan, Rancon Motors’ chief of marketing, stated to The Daily Star.

German automakers Audi and BMW as well as the Chinese behemoth BYD have introduced electric vehicles (EVs) into Bangladesh in recent times.

“The market of the future will be EVs, and this segment will eliminate cars’ dependency on fossil fuels,” Hasan continued.

Since September 2022, when EV registration was first made available in the nation, some 120 EVs from manufacturers including Tesla, Audi, and Porsche have been registered with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

According to the source, import tariffs for cars that run on fossil fuels range from 143 percent to 800 percent, but EV imports are encouraged by the government, which only charges an 89 percent fee.

“Unlike regular cars, EVs don’t require servicing or the need to refill gasoline or octane.”

Despite their increased cost, he thinks Mercedes Benz EVs will be able to make a name for themselves in the market.

For the EVs, the corporation is aiming its marketing at high-earners and businessmen.

Rancon Motors and Genex Infrastructure collaborated to install 21 EV charging stations by April 2024, including seven in Dhaka and 14 in other strategic places throughout the nation, in order to ease the transition to electric vehicles.

In January 2023, Audi Bangladesh became the first car company in Bangladesh to introduce an electric vehicle.

The largest EV manufacturer in the world, BYD Auto Co Ltd, unveiled its flagship model, the BYD Seal, in Bangladesh in March of this year. Two versions of the sedan have been released by the Chinese company’s authorized distributor, CG-Runner Bangladesh.
