The Government of India has significantly expanded the country’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with more than 29,000 public EV charging stations now operational across India, in a major boost to the nation’s clean mobility drive. The installation of these stations is part of a concerted push under key central schemes aimed at accelerating EV adoption nationwide.
This rapid expansion has been supported through financial allocations under both the FAME-II scheme and the PM E-DRIVE programme. So far, the government has earmarked Rs. 912.50 crore under FAME-II and Rs. 2,000 crore under PM E-DRIVE specifically for public EV charging infrastructure.
According to official data, 29,151 public electric vehicle charging stations have been set up across the country under these initiatives, marking a notable milestone in India’s transition to cleaner transport. The deployment spans major cities, tier-2 urban centres, highway corridors and emerging EV demand regions, reflecting coordinated implementation efforts by multiple ministries and agencies.
The FAME-II scheme, launched earlier to incentivise EV purchasing and infrastructure development, has already deployed tens of thousands of EV chargers, with significant portions of its budget directed towards setting up public charging points. Under this scheme, a chunk of the allocated funds has been utilised to roll out charging infrastructure in both urban and rural locations.
Complementing this, the PM E-DRIVE initiative issued operational guidelines in September 2025 to streamline the rollout of EV charging stations across the country. These guidelines provide a structured framework for eligible public and private entities to participate in building and operating charging infrastructure, thereby broadening the ecosystem and encouraging investment.
Officials say these combined efforts not only enhance the accessibility of EV charging but also support India’s broader goals of reducing fossil-fuel dependence, cutting emissions and boosting the domestic EV market. As the charging network grows, policymakers are focusing on making EV adoption more convenient and affordable for consumers and fleet operators alike.
