Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that India is set to become a global force in electric mobility, with the country poised to export electric vehicles (EVs) to more than 100 nations. Modi made this announcement during the ET World Leaders Forum 2025, a significant platform showcasing India’s expanding prowess in manufacturing, technology, and sustainable transportation.
Modi described India’s EV export initiative as a “new success story” that reflects the country’s rapidly evolving manufacturing capabilities and diversified auto export portfolio. He noted that annual auto exports surged from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore today, now encompassing metro coaches, rail coaches, locomotives, automobiles, and two-wheelers.
The Prime Minister emphasized the pivotal role played by India’s domestic research and innovation ecosystem in attaining this milestone. While acknowledging the contributions of international collaboration, he highlighted that India’s future leadership in the global EV market will be rooted in homegrown design, quality, and technological advancements.
Adding to the context of this triumphant development, Modi cited several positive economic indicators: June 2025 recorded a staggering 22 lakh new EPFO enrolments, foreign exchange reserves reached historic highs, and inflation dropped to its lowest level since 2017. Concurrently, India’s solar power capacity has grown dramatically from 2.5 GW in 2014 to 100 GW today.
This export push carries significant implications for both established and emerging players in India’s EV industry. Firms that are export-ready stand to benefit from enhanced policy backing, while others will need to invest in manufacturing excellence, global compliance, and research to remain competitive on the international stage.
