India’s EV Charging Network Grows Rapidly, Reaches 24,000 Stations

India’s public electric vehicle charging infrastructure has risen dramatically, reaching approximately 24,000 stations by mid-2025, marking a fourfold increase since 2023, according to the India Charging Report 2025 by TATA.ev.

This expansive rollout was powered by the Open Collaboration Framework, which brought together TATA.ev, charge point operators (CPOs), and oil marketing companies. In just 15 months, this collaboration added more than 18,000 new public charging stations based on real travel data and gap-analysis.

EV usage in India is also accelerating. EVs now cover an average of 1,600 kilometres per month roughly 40% more than conventional internal-combustion vehicles. The number of EV owners using their vehicles nearly every day has also climbed, supported by the expanding public charging network.

While the growth is notable, challenges remain. Around early 2024, approximately 12,100 out of 25,000 public chargers were non-functional, and about 38% of users highlighted charger unreliability as a key hurdle especially along highways. Discovery and payments also remain fragmented, with drivers relying on 17–20 different apps to locate and pay for charging.

To improve reliability and user experience, TATA.ev introduced the “.ev verified” charger system selected based on 90%+ uptime and positive customer feedback. Over 500 such chargers are already live on the iRA.ev app, and they’ve shown a 37% increase in usage since rollout.

Looking ahead, the rollout of the Mega Charger network continues. These 120-kW stations offer over 95% uptime and up to 25% preferential tariffs for TATA EV owners. Currently, 30 Mega Chargers are operational, with plans to expand to 500 locations nationwide by 2027.
