The total number of electric vehicle (EV) registrations in September increased to 1.59 lakh from 1.29 lakh in the same month the previous year, which is encouraging for the country’s EV adoption. The government’s VAHAN statistics indicates that there was a notable 23% increase in EV registrations (year-over-year). Compared to the same period last year, EV volumes climbed by 20% in the first half of the current fiscal year.
Sales of electric two-wheelers increased to 0.90 lakh from 0.64 lakh in the same month the previous year. According to data, the segment selling electric three-wheelers saw sales of 0.63 lakh units, up from 0.58 lakh units in September 2023. Sales for Ola Electric decreased from 27,587 units in August to 24,665 units in September. In September, Bajaj Auto registered 19,103 units, an increase from 16,789 units. TVS Motor increased its registration from 17,649 units in August to 18,084 units.
Sales of EV manufacturer Ather Energy increased, going from 10,980 units in August to 12,676 units in September. Hero MotoCorp’s sales dropped from 4,755 units to 4,304 units.
Mahindra Last Mile Mobility continued to top the electric three-wheeler market with 6,087 units, followed by Bajaj Auto with 5,004 units.
Total EV registrations across all sectors increased to 8.93 lakh units during the first half of the current fiscal year (FY25) from 7.45 lakh units during the same period the previous year. In the meantime, the government unveiled the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) program on Tuesday. The two-year program will cost Rs 10,900 crore in funding. On September 11, the Union Cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the PM-Drive program to encourage electric transportation throughout the nation. In order to create a cleaner and more sustainable future, the PM E-DRIVE program will be essential in hastening the adoption of EVs and constructing vital charging infrastructure across the country.
