Panasonic Energy has developed a new solid-state battery capable of operating at temperatures of up to 150°C (302°F). The development raises the battery’s operating temperature capability from the company’s previous level of 125°C, strengthening its potential for use in applications that require reliable performance in high-temperature environments.
The newly developed battery uses a small-format prismatic cell design. According to Panasonic Energy, the prismatic structure can offer greater flexibility in product design compared with conventional coin-shaped cells. The company is continuing to develop the technology for applications where batteries need to operate under demanding temperature conditions.
Panasonic Energy is initially focusing on industrial machinery and vehicle sensors for the new solid-state battery. The technology could also support applications such as medical equipment sterilisation, where battery components may need to withstand elevated temperatures.
The company plans to move the battery toward customer evaluation through sample shipments. Panasonic Energy is expected to begin shipping samples between October and December 2026, allowing potential customers to assess the technology for different high-temperature applications.
Following the sample stage, Panasonic Energy is targeting mass production approximately one to two years later, depending on development and commercialisation progress. The company’s approach is focused on first validating the battery technology in targeted industrial applications before expanding toward larger-scale production.
Panasonic Energy is also working on other next-generation battery technologies, including cylindrical batteries for humanoid robots. The company’s latest solid-state battery development highlights its efforts to expand battery technology beyond conventional applications and address specialised requirements such as high-temperature operation.
