Panasonic Holdings Corporation has announced plans to develop a next-generation EV battery with significantly higher capacity, designed to boost driving range and energy efficiency. The company aims to roll out this advanced battery technology by late 2027, positioning it as a key step forward in the evolution of electric mobility.

The innovation focuses on an anode-free battery design, which eliminates the need for a traditional anode during production. Instead, a lithium metal anode naturally forms during the first charging cycle. This design enables a greater concentration of active cathode materials such as nickel, cobalt, and aluminum, increasing energy density without enlarging the battery’s size. With this advancement, EVs like the Tesla Model Y could see their range extended by up to 145 kilometers (around 90 miles).

In addition to boosting range, Panasonic is working to reduce nickel content in its battery composition to bring down manufacturing costs while preserving efficiency. The company’s move into anode-free technology aligns with a growing global interest in this approach, which many experts see as a game-changer for the future of EV battery production.

Alongside its battery innovation efforts, Panasonic is ramping up its production footprint. The company recently opened a new lithium-ion battery plant in De Soto, Kansas, where it has begun large-scale production of cylindrical cells. When combined with its existing U.S. facility, Panasonic’s total electric vehicle battery output in the country is expected to reach nearly 73 gigawatt-hours annually.

Experts believe that Panasonic’s push for higher-capacity batteries could pave the way for lighter, more energy-efficient, and cost-effective electric vehicles, ultimately driving wider consumer adoption. This initiative also strengthens Panasonic’s position as a critical supplier to leading automakers such as Tesla, as global demand for EVs continues to rise.

Through these advancements, Panasonic aims to speed up the transition to cleaner transportation by delivering batteries that offer extended driving ranges and lower production costs, setting a new benchmark for the EV battery industry worldwide.
