Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off Maruti Suzuki first battery-electric vehicle, the e-Vitara, from the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, marking a milestone in India’s burgeoning electric vehicle journey.
The e-Vitara is a fully Made-in-India electric SUV and the first global EV from Maruti Suzuki, destined for export to more than 100 countries, including major markets in Europe and Japan. Modi hailed the launch as a significant stride toward achieving the government’s Make in India, Make for the World vision.
The plant will also serve as a global production hub for the e-Vitara, capable of exporting units worldwide. Additionally, Modi inaugurated the next phase of the hybrid battery electrode facility at the same site, reinforcing India’s push to build a resilient clean energy and EV manufacturing ecosystem.
Following the launch, Maruti Suzuki’s shares surged nearly 3%, hitting a 52-week high of ₹14,825 on the NSE, underscoring boosted investor confidence in the company’s EV strategy.
Suzuki Motor Corporation also announced plans to invest approximately $8 billion (₹70,000 crore) in India over the next five to six years, part of a broader strategy to scale up EV production nationwide.
The debut of the e-Vitara follows its earlier unveiling at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi, where Maruti Suzuki showcased the SUV built on its HEARTECT-e electric platform with premium interiors, advanced digital displays, Level 2 ADAS safety features, and multiple battery options.
