Powertrac has announced its entry into the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sector with plans to establish a 10 GWh advanced BESS manufacturing facility in Gujarat. As part of the expansion, the company has signed and released an order agreement with China-based SUNKA LEAD for the development of the proposed BESS manufacturing production line. The initiative marks Powertrac’s move beyond its existing renewable energy operations into energy storage manufacturing.
The planned BESS manufacturing line will be based on a highly automated and AI-enabled manufacturing architecture. According to the company, the production setup will include automated BESS container fabrication, Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)-based material movement, robotic assembly and handling, automated inspection and testing, and advanced quality-control systems. The line will also include integrated BESS assembly, testing and commissioning capabilities.
The order with SUNKA LEAD is expected to support Powertrac’s development of scalable BESS manufacturing capabilities in Gujarat. The integration of AGVs, robotic handling, automated inspection and testing is intended to improve manufacturing consistency, operational efficiency, traceability and product quality as the company builds its energy-storage business.
Powertrac’s entry into BESS expands its existing activities in solar photovoltaic manufacturing, turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and distributed renewable-energy independent power producer (IPP) projects. The company said it plans to leverage its experience in renewable-energy project development and EPC operations to build an integrated renewable-energy and storage platform.
The proposed facility is being positioned to address demand from utility-scale energy-storage projects, commercial and industrial customers, renewable-energy developers and grid infrastructure operators. Powertrac also plans to explore applications involving grid stabilisation, ancillary services, energy-storage operations and maintenance, and other energy-transition requirements.
The BESS expansion comes as energy storage becomes increasingly important for integrating renewable power and managing the variability of solar and wind generation. Powertrac currently has around 480 MW of distributed renewable-energy IPP projects under signed power purchase agreements and has set a target of reaching 1 GW of operational IPP capacity by 2030. Through the proposed 10 GWh Gujarat facility, the company aims to strengthen its presence across renewable energy and energy storage while developing domestic BESS manufacturing capabilities.
