Skoda Auto has put India on its global roadmap as one of the most important growth markets for electric vehicles. CEO Klaus Zellmer said the company is working to reduce its dependence on Europe and sees India as a strong second base for future expansion. Rising demand, government support, and shifting consumer preferences make the country central to Skoda’s EV strategy.

The automaker plans to adapt its CMP21 platform—originally developed in China—for the Indian market. This means reworking design, pricing, and features to suit local buyers rather than relying on imported models. The idea is to create EVs that match Indian road conditions and affordability expectations.

Zellmer made it clear that India won’t just receive “hand-me-down” technology. Skoda wants to fine-tune every detail—from range and charging options to interior design—to ensure the vehicles feel made for Indian customers. It’s a move aimed at building stronger connections with buyers and boosting acceptance of EVs in the region.

Models like the Enyaq have already been introduced in India, but Skoda is shifting away from a simple import model. Future vehicles, including the upcoming Epiq, are expected to lean heavily on local assembly and local supply chains. This approach cuts costs and helps the company stay competitive while supporting India’s push for domestic manufacturing.

The strategy is part of Volkswagen Group’s larger “India 2.0 Project,” which injected more than €1 billion between 2019 and 2021 to strengthen its presence in the country. Under Škoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL), brands like Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini are already active, but Skoda is leading the EV charge.

By localising platforms and sourcing components within India, Skoda hopes to create a long-term foundation for growth. The company isn’t just chasing sales; it wants to establish India as a hub for innovation, production, and sustainable mobility. For Skoda, the future of EVs in India is not a side bet—it’s a defining move.
