In a major move toward electrification, Toyota Motor Corporation has officially revealed its first battery-electric pickup truck, the Toyota Hilux BEV, marking a pivotal moment in the brand’s global transition toward zero-emission mobility. The announcement underlines Toyota’s commitment to evolving its iconic Hilux line-up while aligning with its broader sustainability agenda.

The new Hilux BEV retains the rugged, body-on-frame structure of its diesel counterpart, but is powered entirely by electricity. It features a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with dual electric motors that provide all-wheel-drive capability. The vehicle is engineered to offer a WLTP-certified driving range of around 240 km (150 miles). Despite the shift to electric power, Toyota says it has preserved the Hilux’s core work-horse credentials — with a payload capacity of approximately 715 kg, towing capability of up to 1,600 kg, and a water-wading depth of up to 700 mm.

From a design perspective, the Hilux BEV carries forward the rugged aesthetics associated with the Hilux nameplate, while introducing modern EV-styling cues. It shows off a closed-off front grille, streamlined LED headlamps, and a refreshed digital cockpit featuring Toyota’s latest connected-car interface. These updates aim to blend the familiar Hilux appearance with a forward-looking electric vehicle look and feel.

Toyota’s unveiling of the Hilux BEV represents an important step for the company as it enters the electric utility-vehicle segment in earnest — a space that has seen growing demand across Asia Pacific, Australia and Africa. Analysts suggest that by combining Toyota’s reputation for durability with battery-electric technology, the Hilux BEV stands to appeal both to commercial operators and eco-conscious individual buyers.

In terms of rollout strategy, Toyota is targeting initial markets including Thailand, Indonesia and select Asian nations, with deliveries expected as early as December 2025. No definite timeline has yet been announced for a North American release. Being up against electric pickup rivals from the likes of BYD, Great Wall Motors and Ford, Toyota appears to be positioning the Hilux BEV as a global workhorse in the EV era.

The Hilux BEV aligns with Toyota’s broader “multi-pathway” carbon neutrality strategy, which includes battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel-cell models and hybrids. Toyota officials emphasise that while the company continues developing next-generation solid-state batteries and hybrid power-trains, the Hilux BEV is a concrete demonstration of its readiness to electrify even its most iconic utility models. As markets shift and regulations tighten globally, the Hilux BEV could play a significant role in Toyota’s evolution and the pickup segment’s future.
