TUAL, a UK-based developer of commercial electric vehicle charging solutions, has partnered with advanced manufacturer Tharsus to scale production of its PowerUp Charger. The battery-buffered DC fast charger is designed for commercial EV fleets operating at sites where available grid capacity can limit conventional high-power charging.
The partnership will support the transition of the PowerUp Charger from proof-of-concept and field trials towards higher-volume production. Tharsus will work with TUAL’s design and engineering teams to optimise the manufacturing process and help prepare the charger for scalable production.
The PowerUp Charger combines battery energy storage, power electronics and software to provide DC fast charging in grid-constrained environments. Its battery-buffered design can provide additional power for vehicle charging where the available site grid connection cannot support conventional high-power charging capacity.
The announcement follows TUAL securing Made in Britain status for the company and its PowerUp Charger. According to the company, the status supports its focus on UK manufacturing as it prepares to scale the technology and develop an export-ready production model for European markets.
Tharsus, based in Blyth, Northumberland, specialises in taking complex electro-mechanical products from prototype through to production. Its capabilities include lithium-ion battery systems, intelligent control systems, power electronics, electric mobility solutions and connected robotics. The company also works with businesses developing and manufacturing EV charging infrastructure.
TUAL said Tharsus’ manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities will support the company as it moves towards larger-scale production and expands its customer base across Europe. TUAL Founder and CEO Phil Clarke highlighted the importance of technical and operational expertise in meeting the company’s uptime and performance targets, while Tharsus Founder Brian Palmer said the partnership would support the introduction of TUAL’s charging technology to European markets.
