Volkswagen announces the world’s first integration of ChatGPT into its IDA voice assistant during CES 2024, held in Las Vegas from January 9–12. All Volkswagen cars equipped with IDA will soon have this AI-powered chatbot installed, which will allow users to browse an ever-growing AI database and have content read aloud while driving.
Cerence Chat Pro, created by Cerence Inc., Volkswagen’s IT partner, serves as the foundation for the integration. It is an example of an advanced ChatGPT integration suitable for an automobile. Volkswagen will be the first mass manufacturer to use Chat GPT in a number of its production vehicles, beginning in the second quarter of 2024.
Along with the newest infotainment systems, the new ChatGPT feature will be available in models such as ID.703, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the new Tiguan and Passat, and the Golf04. This integration, made possible by Cerence Chat Pro, expands the functionality of the Volkswagen voice assistant beyond simple voice control. IDA is capable of handling air conditioning, navigation, infotainment, and general information inquiries. These features will get deeper with future AI improvements, which will enable hands-free interactions, vehicle-specific information, and more.
Volkswagen guarantees that no vehicle data is accessed via ChatGPT. Saying “Hello IDA” or touching a button on the steering wheel are the easy ways to activate it. From information searches to vehicle functions, IDA intelligently prioritizes requests. Unanswerable questions are submitted to AI anonymously, and the Volkswagen voice is used to offer the answers.
Data security is of utmost importance; after a query has been addressed, it is promptly erased. To enable IDA’s precise and pertinent responses, Cerence Chat Pro uses a variety of sources, including ChatGPT. This feature improves the driving experience by putting an emphasis on security and a smooth interaction with IDA’s features.
Volkswagen Board Member for Technical Development Kai Grünitz highlights the company’s dedication to democratizing technology. This dedication is demonstrated by the collaboration with Cerence and the incorporation of ChatGPT, which gives drivers immediate access to AI-based solutions and highlights Volkswagen’s creative potential.
The collaboration’s emphasis on utilizing generative AI and huge language models to improve post-purchase car experiences is highlighted by Cerence CEO Stefan Ortmanns. The integration of Cerence Chat Pro with Volkswagen is a prime example of adaptability, personalization, safety, and ease of use for drivers. In the future, Cerence and Volkswagen hope to create a large-language model-based
