Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has invited bids for the procurement of energy through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a total capacity of 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh. The procurement is planned for a medium-term period of five years and will be carried out through tariff-based competitive bidding. The tender is intended to help MSEDCL mitigate its Energy Storage Obligation (ESO).
According to the tender notice, the proposed 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh BESS will operate at one cycle per day. MSEDCL has also provided a Green Shoe Option of 500 MW/2,000 MWh under the tender. If the Green Shoe Option is exercised in full, the additional capacity would take the potential procurement to 1,500 MW/6,000 MWh.
The tender has been issued for the procurement of energy from BESS for five years. MSEDCL has specified that the procurement will be undertaken through a tariff-based competitive bidding process using the designated e-bidding portal mentioned in the tender notification. The bidding process will be governed by the requirements and conditions set out in the tender documents.
MSEDCL has published the tender along with the relevant Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) and Request for Selection (RfS) documents. Interested bidders are required to refer to these documents for the detailed technical, commercial and bidding requirements applicable to the proposed BESS energy procurement.
The latest tender adds another utility-scale battery energy storage procurement requirement to MSEDCL’s ongoing BESS initiatives. The company’s tender listings also show an earlier 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh BESS procurement process, which is separate from the new September 2026 tender. Therefore, the newly issued procurement should be identified specifically as the 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh BESS tender.
MSEDCL published the latest tender notification on September 24, 2026, inviting bids for the five-year procurement of energy through 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh BESS with one cycle per day, along with the 500 MW/2,000 MWh Green Shoe Option. The procurement is being conducted under tariff-based competitive bidding to mitigate MSEDCL’s Energy Storage Obligation.
