A Bajaj Chetak electric scooter caught fire while parked roadside in Vikas Nagar, Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur district, on Friday evening. Fortunately, no one was injured, local fire officials confirmed.

The blaze occurred around 9:30 p.m. after the owner left the scooter and went shopping. Locals noticed the fire and alerted emergency services. A water tanker was dispatched promptly, and the fire was extinguished quickly.

A local Bajaj dealer said the electric scooters metal body limited the damage to the wiring and harness, preventing more extensive destruction. The scooter was about one year old and had clocked close to 10,000 km.

Bajaj Auto responded swiftly, stating that a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the fire’s cause. The company emphasized that customer safety is its highest priority and assured support to the affected rider.

This incident follows a previous case in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar last December, which Bajaj clarified involved only smoke from a plastic component—not an actual fire.

As India’s EV market continues to expand, concerns over battery and vehicle safety are mounting. Industry observers point to the need for robust battery management systems, stringent quality standards, and clear regulatory oversight to maintain consumer confidence.
