BASF joint venture, BASF Shanshan Battery Materials (BSBM), has delivered the first batches of mass-produced cathode active materials (CAM) for semi-solid-state batteries to Beijing-based WELION New Energy. The achievement marks a key milestone toward the industrialization of solid-state battery technologies.

This collaboration combines WELION’s more than 40 years of experience in solid-state battery development with BSBM’s two decades of expertise in cathode materials. Their efforts have fast-tracked the project from concept to mass production in just one year.

BSBM developed an ultra-high-nickel NCM cathode active material with a novel composite coating designed to improve battery energy density, reduce internal resistance, and enhance both cycle life and calendar lifespan by suppressing interface side reactions.

Dr. Xin Xia, CTO of BSBM, credited the breakthrough to the technical synergy between the two organizations. WELION’s Director of Engineering, Dr. Wenjun Li, praised the collaboration as advancing the future of battery innovation.

Dr. Jin Xiang, General Manager of WELION, expressed confidence in the partnership, emphasizing BASF’s rapid response and robust technical capabilities in supporting the next generation of semi-solid-state battery development.

Desmond Long, Senior Vice President of BASF Battery Materials and CEO of BSBM, described the achievement as a milestone for BASF’s materials business and a strategic leap forward in solid-state battery technology worldwide.
