BMW M GmbH has formally announced a major shift in its performance vehicle strategy, unveiling plans to launch a new generation of fully electric high-performance models starting in 2027. These vehicles represent a significant transformation from traditional internal combustion engines to all-electric powertrains, aligning with broader industry electrification goals.
The upcoming electric BMW M models will be built on the automakers Neue Klasse platform, which underpins next-gen EV architecture. At the core of this transition is the BMW M eDrive system, a groundbreaking setup featuring four electric motors, with one dedicated to each wheel. This design promises unparalleled traction, control and dynamic response across a range of driving conditions.
BMW M’s leadership says the quad-motor layout will allow precise distribution of torque at each wheel, enhancing performance on both the road and racetrack. By enabling individual control of every wheel, the system is expected to deliver exceptional handling, stability, and acceleration characteristics that stay true to the brand’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” ethos.
A standout feature of the new models is the integration of BMW’s “Heart of Joy” central computing architecture. This suite of interconnected high-performance onboard computers — referred to internally as “Superbrains” — will manage driving dynamics, automated functions, infotainment and comfort systems, and enable rapid software updates over the vehicle’s lifespan.
Power will be supplied by a performance-optimised high-voltage battery with over 100 kWh of usable energy and 800-volt charging technology, allowing quick recharging and sustained high output for spirited driving. The battery also serves as a structural element to improve overall chassis rigidity and handling performance.
BMW M has emphasised that even as it transitions to electrification, its vehicles will retain emotional engagement through features such as simulated gear shifts, distinctive sound design and multiple drive modes tailored for performance enthusiasts. This blend of cutting-edge technology with traditional driving excitement underlines BMW M’s commitment to redefining high-performance electric vehicles.
