An essential part of the automotive aftermarket is mechanics. The lack of adequate training in the newest automotive technologies, however, is one of the major knowledge gaps for mechanics. Castrol, the top lubricant manufacturer in India, has consistently supported the mechanic community through pertinent business & social initiatives. Castrol India has launched an innovative EV-readiness training programme for mechanics in order to support mechanic upskilling and support the transition to greener and more sustainable mobility. The Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) of India has given its approval to the programme.

The first leg of the EV-readiness training program was held from 13 to 16 September in New Delhi, covering over 100 car and bike mechanics. The second leg of the training was held in Chennai from 7 to 10 November, covering 100 car and bike mechanics. Castrol’s EV readiness training includes an eight-hour module where mechanics get to learn the basics of EVs and acquire diagnostic skills for EV service & maintenance. They are also offered a preview of the Castrol ON range of advanced EV fluids for improved electric vehicle performance, which was launched globally in 2021 and will soon be launched in India.

After completion of the training, the mechanics are evaluated through a quiz to test their knowledge and understanding on EVs, and are awarded with a certificate of completion. Based on a strong and successful response from mechanics, Castrol India plans to roll out its EV-readiness training to other cities in the country.

Speaking about the initiative, Sandeep Sangwan, Managing Director, Castrol India Limited, says, “We have always supported the mechanic community through various initiatives on the business and social front, be it the Castrol Super Mechanic contest or our CSR program: Castrol Eklavya. Our training programs for independent auto mechanics are specially designed to enable knowledge transfer around the latest automotive technologies and help them stay updated on changing trends. Through our training & certification courses, mechanics feel empowered to deliver best-in-class service experiences to their customers. It also helps them grow and expand their business and secure their livelihoods. With electric vehicles coming into the market, we see ourselves as an acceleration partner for helping mechanics and workshops get EV-ready.”
