Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has been honoured with the Volkswagen Group Award 2026, becoming the only power battery company and the only mainland China-based enterprise to receive the recognition this year. The award highlights CATL’s contribution to innovation, supply chain reliability and long-term collaboration with Volkswagen as the automaker accelerates its electric mobility strategy.
The recognition reflects the strong partnership between CATL and Volkswagen, which began with the supply of NCM battery cells for Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform in 2018. The collaboration has now expanded to support the mass production of Volkswagen’s next-generation Unified Cell, reinforcing CATL’s position as one of the automaker’s key battery technology partners.
Volkswagen Group presented the 2026 supplier awards to 11 companies for their exceptional performance, innovation and strategic support across its global operations. The company stated that a resilient supplier network remains critical as the automotive industry undergoes rapid transformation toward electrification, digitalisation and sustainable manufacturing.
CATL said the award recognises its achievements in research and development, stable global supply capabilities and efficient execution across international markets. The battery maker continues to strengthen its relationships with leading global automakers by delivering advanced battery technologies that improve vehicle performance and production efficiency.
The strategic cooperation between CATL and Volkswagen extends beyond battery supply. The two companies have been working on battery research, new materials, advanced components and sustainable supply chain initiatives. Their broader collaboration also includes battery recycling, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology and measures to enhance raw material transparency and reduce carbon emissions.
With the latest recognition, CATL further strengthens its role in Volkswagen’s electrification roadmap while reinforcing its global leadership in EV battery technology. As demand for electric vehicles continues to grow worldwide, the expanded partnership is expected to support the development of more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable battery solutions for future Volkswagen models.
