Italian energy major Eni and battery manufacturer Seri Industrial have officially launched FAENIX, a new joint venture focused on advancing Europe’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supply chain for stationary energy storage systems. The initiative is aimed at boosting regional battery manufacturing capabilities while supporting Europe’s growing clean energy and grid storage requirements.
FAENIX has been established through a partnership between FIB, a subsidiary of Seri Industrial, and Eni Industrial Evolution, with ownership divided at 70% and 30%, respectively. The new company will oversee the commercial development, technology advancement, and market expansion of LFP-based Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Europe, strengthening the continent’s domestic battery ecosystem.
The venture will commercialize battery storage products manufactured at the Teverola and Brindisi facilities in southern Italy. Construction is already underway at Brindisi, where Eni Storage Systems is developing a new BESS assembly line alongside a gigafactory that will support large-scale production of LFP battery cells and modules.
Once fully operational, the integrated Teverola–Brindisi manufacturing hub is expected to achieve a combined annual production capacity of 16 GWh by 2030. According to the companies, this capacity could account for more than 10% of Europe’s stationary battery energy storage market, significantly enhancing regional supply chain resilience and reducing dependence on imported battery technologies.
The development roadmap includes completion of the BESS assembly line during the first half of 2027, followed by the commissioning of a second gigafactory with an annual production capacity exceeding 8 GWh by 2029. The project also outlines future expansion into cathode active material production and battery recycling, creating a more integrated and circular battery value chain in Europe.
The launch of FAENIX reflects Europe’s broader strategy to build a competitive and self-reliant battery manufacturing industry capable of supporting renewable energy integration and grid stability. By combining industrial expertise, advanced battery technology, and domestic production, Eni and Seri Industrial aim to strengthen Europe’s position in the rapidly expanding energy storage sector while accelerating the clean energy transition.
