ChemVolt Global, a leading energy solutions company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish a 5 GWh lithium-ion cell manufacturing gigafactory in the state, with a planned investment of INR 2,500 crore. The project aims to significantly boost India’s domestic battery cell production capacity to support growing demand from grid storage, clean mobility, and commercial energy sectors.
The gigafactory is expected to play a major role in strengthening local manufacturing capabilities and developing a robust supplier and services ecosystem around advanced battery technologies. Officials involved in the project believe the facility will help position Andhra Pradesh as a key destination for advanced energy manufacturing in India.
According to the phased development plan, Phase I of the gigafactory will establish a 1 GWh advanced cell production line by the third quarter of 2027, focusing on early manufacturing capacity. Phase II will expand the facility by an additional 4 GWh, reaching the full 5 GWh capacity by mid-2029. The plant will produce high-capacity prismatic lithium-ion cells suitable for grid-scale energy storage and heavy electric vehicle applications.
The facility is expected to generate a significant number of jobs, with around 1,500 direct employment opportunities across manufacturing, engineering, operations, and quality assurance. In addition, more than 4,000 indirect jobs are anticipated through suppliers, logistics, and ancillary services, contributing to broader economic growth in the region.
Kuldeep Gupta, Founder and CEO of ChemVolt Global, described the investment as an important milestone for the company and a strategic contribution to India’s energy manufacturing future. He emphasized the facility’s potential to strengthen domestic supply chains and support the nation’s ambitions to become a global hub for advanced lithium-ion cell production.
Alongside the gigafactory plan, ChemVolt Global also announced an expansion of its energy storage portfolio with new Cell-to-Grid products. These offerings include utility-scale and commercial energy storage systems, designed to meet a wider range of applications and support India’s transition to cleaner and more resilient energy infrastructure.
