Delectrik Wins India’s First 100 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Project

Delectrik Systems has announced that it will deploy India’s first utility-scale 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) project after securing the contract in partnership with Bondada Engineering Limited. The landmark project has been awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) and marks a major step forward in the adoption of long-duration energy storage technologies in the country.

The 100 MWh battery energy storage system will be installed at Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, one of the world’s largest renewable energy parks under development. The project will use Delectrik’s proprietary non-containerised flow battery architecture, designed for large commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications. The installation is expected to be commissioned in 2027 and will include 10 years of operations and maintenance.

According to the company, Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology offers several advantages over conventional lithium-based battery systems, including a service life of more than 25 years, high operational safety, minimal performance degradation during repeated charging cycles and lower long-term operating costs. These features make VRFB technology well suited for long-duration energy storage applications supporting renewable energy integration.

The project will be fully designed, engineered and manufactured in India, supporting the government’s vision of strengthening domestic energy security and reducing long-term dependence on imported battery cells. Delectrik said the use of vanadium-based technology also aligns with efforts to promote indigenous manufacturing and advanced energy storage solutions for the power sector.

India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity, creating a growing need for reliable long-duration energy storage systems to maintain grid stability. With a national target of deploying around 236 GWh of battery energy storage by 2030, projects such as this are expected to play an important role in enabling greater integration of solar and wind power into the electricity grid.

The deployment of India’s first utility-scale 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery project reinforces Delectrik’s position in the advanced battery storage segment while highlighting the increasing commercial adoption of flow battery technology. The project is expected to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable power infrastructure as the country accelerates its clean energy transition.
