The Delhi government has unveiled an ambitious plan to make the city’s entire public transport network fully electric by the end of 2026. This initiative aims to curb air pollution, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable urban mobility across the national capital.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the plan during an event organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), emphasizing the urgent need to adopt clean energy solutions. She stated that every third vehicle in the city should be electric to bring about a significant reduction in air pollution levels.
The move will be driven by the upcoming “Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0”, which will build upon the current EV policy introduced in 2020. The government has extended the existing policy until March 31, 2026, to allow for public participation and feedback before finalizing the new framework. The revised policy is expected to include additional incentives and stricter regulations to accelerate the city’s transition to electric mobility.
Key components of the plan include:
-
Expanding the charging infrastructure across the city to support the growing number of EVs.
-
Providing subsidies and financial incentives to encourage private vehicle owners to switch to EVs.
-
Integrating electric buses and other e-mobility solutions into the city’s public transport system.
The Chief Minister urged citizens to actively participate in this transition by adopting EVs and following traffic rules. She highlighted that the success of this initiative depends not only on government policies but also on collective public support to make Delhi a cleaner and greener city.
This bold step is expected to serve as a model for other metropolitan cities in India. By setting a target for 100% electrification of public transport, Delhi aims to lead the nation’s efforts in achieving sustainable mobility and environmental protection.
