The Albanese Government has announced a A$40 million investment to expand public kerbside and fast electric vehicle charging stations across Australia. The goal is to fast-track the shift to cleaner transportation and ease household expenses.

The announcement was made by Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen along with Assistant Minister Josh Wilson. They say the funding will help build a more robust EV charging ecosystem by working with electricity networks and private charging providers.

Key parts of the plan include identifying suitable connection points for chargers to reduce both connection time and costs, addressing “charging black spots” especially in regional and rural areas, and launching kerbside charging using existing electricity poles.

The rollout will be guided by consultations with various stakeholders including governments, distribution networks, charging providers, and market bodies to assess urban and regional charging needs.

Minister Bowen highlighted that many EV buyers are workers like teachers, nurses and tradespeople living in outer suburbs, where charging access is limited. He said the aim is to make connecting EV chargers faster and cheaper and to unlock kerbside charging potential in those areas.

Assistant Minister Josh Wilson added that greater public charging capacity will support EV adoption, especially for Australians without off-street parking. More charging options will enable families and businesses to enjoy cost savings that come with EV ownership.
