Government Allocates ₹1,634 Crore to Boost EV Subsidies, Infrastructure

The government has released ₹1,634 crore under the PM E-DRIVE scheme a major step aimed at speeding up electric-vehicle (EV) adoption across India.

Under this fund release, incentives will continue for EV buyers, and financial support will also go toward public-transport electrification and expansion of charging and battery-swap stations.

While the subsidy push is helping many shift toward EVs, experts warn that rollout of charging infrastructure is still lagging. There remain shortages of fast chargers and battery-swap stations, especially along highways, urban corridors, and rural areas — a factor that contributes to “range anxiety.”

If implemented well, this combined support for subsidies and infrastructure could spur widespread EV adoption, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, modernize public transport (including via electric buses), and boost domestic manufacturing of EV components and chargers.

Moving ahead, the government is expected to continue disbursing funds under PM E-DRIVE while urging states and private stakeholders to accelerate installation of charging stations to match the rising EV demand.

This effort could play a crucial role in helping India meet its clean-energy and net-zero targets by 2030 — provided infrastructure rollout keeps pace with subsidies and EV uptake.
