Honda Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a Honda model based on the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck. Announced on October 22, 2026, the agreement marks the first complementary vehicle supply arrangement between the two companies. The new Honda model is scheduled to go on sale in the ASEAN market in 2028.
The Mitsubishi Triton is a one-tonne pickup truck built on a ladder-frame structure. According to the companies, the model is in high demand, particularly in the ASEAN region, and is one of Mitsubishi Motors’ global strategic models. The Triton will serve as the basis for the pickup truck being developed for Honda.
Through this collaboration, Honda plans to add a pickup truck to its vehicle lineup, primarily for the ASEAN market, where the company currently does not offer pickup truck models. The arrangement is intended to help Honda expand its product lineup quickly and efficiently while addressing customer needs in the region.
Mitsubishi Motors is also expected to benefit from the agreement. According to the official announcement, the collaboration will enable the company to increase production volume and improve capacity utilisation at its production plant in Thailand. Both companies agreed to the arrangement after determining that it would create operational synergies.
The collaboration follows discussions under the strategic partnership framework established through a memorandum of understanding signed on August 1, 2024, involving Honda, Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan Motor Co. The three companies have been exploring opportunities to complement their respective vehicle lineups by making use of their products and capabilities to respond to changing business conditions and customer requirements across different regions.
Honda and Mitsubishi Motors stated that they would continue exploring ways to strengthen their partnership and improve their competitiveness while responding to diverse customer needs. The Honda pickup truck based on the Mitsubishi Triton is scheduled to go on sale in the ASEAN market in 2028. Further details, including the model name, pricing and technical specifications, were not provided in the October 22 announcement.
