The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has issued a global tender to invite bids for establishing 10 GWh of Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery manufacturing capacity in India under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme. The initiative is focused on accelerating domestic battery cell production for grid-scale stationary storage systems, supporting the country’s clean energy ambitions and reducing dependence on imported battery technologies.
The newly released Request for Proposal (RFP) seeks to identify eligible manufacturers capable of setting up giga-scale ACC battery manufacturing facilities across India. The allocated 10 GWh manufacturing capacity is specifically aimed at supporting large-scale energy storage applications that are essential for improving renewable energy integration and strengthening grid reliability.
The latest tender is part of the government’s broader PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage, which was approved in 2021 with a total financial outlay of ₹18,100 crore. The programme aims to establish 50 GWh of domestic ACC battery manufacturing capacity, helping India build a self-reliant battery ecosystem while encouraging investments in advanced energy storage technologies.
By expanding local battery manufacturing, the government intends to support India’s rapidly growing renewable energy sector, electric mobility ecosystem, and energy storage infrastructure. Domestic production is expected to improve supply chain resilience, lower import dependence, create employment opportunities, and encourage technology development within the country.
Industry participants from both India and overseas are expected to compete for the available manufacturing capacity under the global bidding process. The initiative is likely to attract fresh investments into giga-scale battery manufacturing facilities while promoting innovation in advanced battery technologies required for future energy storage projects. According to the tender schedule, the last date for bid submission is October 13, 2026.
The fresh tender highlights the government’s continued focus on strengthening India’s battery manufacturing capabilities and building a robust domestic supply chain for clean energy technologies. As renewable power deployment and battery energy storage demand continue to rise, the new 10 GWh allocation is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s long-term energy transition and manufacturing competitiveness.
