OMV Petrom has successfully completed a major European Union-backed electric vehicle charging infrastructure project, installing 384 ultra-fast charging points across Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia. The initiative, supported through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), is designed to strengthen EV charging infrastructure along key transport corridors and accelerate the transition toward cleaner mobility across Central and Eastern Europe.
The newly deployed charging network includes 304 charging points at 74 locations in Romania, 28 charging points at seven locations in Hungary, and 52 charging points at 11 locations in Slovakia. These stations are strategically located along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridor connecting Bratislava, Budapest, Oradea, and Cluj-Napoca, making long-distance electric vehicle travel more convenient and reliable for motorists.
The project was implemented by a consortium led by OMV Petrom Marketing, together with OMV Hungária and OMV Slovensko, in partnership with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). Backed by an investment of approximately €40 million, the initiative demonstrates how collaboration between industry and European institutions can accelerate the rollout of sustainable transport infrastructure.
OMV Petrom said the expansion is part of its long-term strategy to develop one of the region’s leading EV charging networks. The company has significantly increased its charging infrastructure over the past few years, growing from around 120 charging points in 2022 to nearly 1,500 charging points across Romania and neighboring Central and Eastern European markets. This rapid expansion reflects the rising demand for reliable public charging solutions as EV adoption continues to grow.
According to the company, improving charging accessibility is essential to supporting the wider adoption of electric vehicles. The newly installed ultra-fast chargers will reduce charging times, improve travel convenience, and strengthen cross-border connectivity for EV users. The project also aligns with the European Union’s objective of creating a modern, interconnected charging network that supports low-emission transportation across the continent.
With the completion of this EU-supported initiative, OMV Petrom has further strengthened its position in the regional electric mobility ecosystem. The expanded charging network is expected to encourage greater EV adoption, improve charging availability on major transport routes, and contribute to Europe’s long-term decarbonization and sustainable mobility goals through a more accessible and reliable charging infrastructure.
